My 2023 Key Takeaway - Leaders are Learners
As I reflect back on 2023 something that solidified for me was the fact that my favourite and the most influential leaders I know are learners! They have experience, yes. They have honed their confidence, presence and influence skills, yes. They are wise, yes. But what stood out to me the most is that they are CURIOUS! Questions from them are a regular occurrence, they read regularly, they network with like minded individuals, and they challenge their status quo by upskilling.
This past year, I am proud of how I have challenged myself to develop my curiosity and lean into this notion that leaders are learners! This year I have had the privilege of walking alongside leaders in the NFP and FP sectors providing insights regarding people (Human Resources) that supported them well in making bold and strategic decisions. And guess what? Do you know when I felt that I had the greatest impact? When I asked questions. When I was curious. When I recognized my personal bias and blindspots and challenged them with a posture of curiosity and openness.
On a personal level I challenged myself by reading 5 books last year, something I haven’t been able to accomplish since my first daughter was born in 2018. Read, this was a huge accomplishment for me! I signed up for and attended a Dare to Lead workshop put on by the Inspired Results Group based on the book and research of Brene Brown. And in the spirit of transparency and sharing my story I also signed up for an online financial literacy course built specifically for Millennial and Gen X women, where I learnt a ton and was empowered with strategies to manage my personal finances but also fired up for the opportunities 2024 will bring to my business!
In conclusion, I recently read an article from the Harvard Business Review called, “Our Favorite Management Tips of 2023" and within it they reference an article called “You Don’t Need to Be ‘the Boss’ to Be a Leader” by Matt Mayberry. This article encouraged leaders to embrace their existing strengths and to take time to connect with people. He highlights devoting time to daily development, “Improving your skills will help you expand your impact and influence.” I guess I’m not the only one that knows that the best leaders today are learners.
